I have a thing for community gardens at the moment, so on Sunday (after the Heath) I was delighted to discover a community kitchen garden hidden away behind a high hedge in Waterlow Park. Seeing the strawberry, courgette, runner bean, borage, chilli and spinach plants, which were mostly planted by school kids, growing in this quiet and colourful space made me very happy indeed.

sunday
On the hottest day of the year we were lazing in the Heath reading our books when the clouds darkened and fat droplets of rain started to splat on us. Soon the sky opened and a mini monsoon rained down. We took shelter under the trunk of an old oak tree and watched the thunder storm roll through. After a while, the clouds parted and the sun warmed things up again.

take this waltz
On Friday night S and I saw Take This Waltz at the Everyman Cinema. It was magical
p.s. How cool is the Everyman? You sit on reclining sofas and you can order treats from your seat! S swears he'll never go to any other cinema again.
p.p.s. Dad, the soundtrack features two Leonard Cohen songs. I think that makes this movie a 'must see' for you.

the men's olympic road race
On Saturday we watched dream team GB cycle their hearts out in a valiant team effort to try and launch the Manx Missile into the finishing shoot and win gold for Britain. Unfortunately, things didn't go to plan and not even two stage winners plus the overall winner of the Tour de France could chase down the break away group and get Cavendish to The Mall in time for a sprint finish. It was a gutting result, but the team rode incredibly, and being able to watch the action road-side in Richmond Park amongst the crowds of supporters was amazing. Seeing Wiggins and the rest of Team GB whizz past us in the lead of the peloton made me very happy indeed.

sunday
We had a lovely lazy Sunday. I made a dent in our stash of frozen ripe bananas and made Nigella's Banana Bread for breakfast. I didn't have any rum or walnuts unfortunately, so the sultanas went in as is and I substituted the walnuts for chocolate, which was extra delicious. In the afternoon we cleaned off our bikes for the first time in over a year and went on our first cycle through London to test out a route to my new job. I'm not the most confident road-cycler at the best of times and taking on London's weekend traffic was pretty nerve-racking. I'm hoping to find a quieter route so I can brave the roads by myself. I see so many cycle commuters these days and it makes me very jealous! It's definitely the fastest way for me to get to work so I'll keep you posted.
On another note, the sun is shining again in London! We're celebrating with a picnic in the park this evening and brownies are on the menu, yum!
P.S. How awesome was Cavendish's stage win on the Champs-Élysées? So stoked for Team Sky. I can't wait to see Team GB perform on Saturday in London!

the chelsea flower show
The Chelsea Flower Show was on back when it was hot and sunny. Remember that week? It's a distant memory now... S and I attended on the Saturday and it was a glorious day, beautiful blue skies and scorching hot sunshine.

We met some friends and wandered through the exhibits in the shade of the Great Pavilion. There were ingenious watering systems, where a series of plants were being drip-fed by the oxygen tubes you can buy for fish tanks, seedlings growing in bottle caps, beautiful lupins and roses, pink pineapples, bonsai trees over 100 years old, a million varieties of daffodils and carnivorous plants worth £70,000.
My favourite exhibit was designed by some school children who turned a vandalised junk yard into something beautiful. Plants were growing out of old shoes, flowers were blossoming in a pile of used tyres and lilly-pads were blooming in an oil drum; it was wonderful!
The show gardens were so pretty and very English with fields of wild-flowers, streams and caravans.
We drank Pimms and champagne in the sunshine and when the crowds and heat got too much we called it a day and went to the pub.

scenes from a street party
It's the Queen's Diamond Jubilee this weekend, so today our street celebrated with a party. There was lots of British bunting, a band and BBQs. I made these muffins, which went down a treat. It was the perfect way for us to meet our new neighbours.
